The Karoy Foundation, a multi-award-winning UK charity, is committed to fostering socioeconomical sustainability and transforming lives worldwide through a steadfast dedication to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS Roy and Carmen Wiltshire: Trailblazing Windrush Pioneers of Change. Roy and Carmen have dedicated over six decades to humanitarian efforts, transforming countless lives through their unwavering commitment to social change and socioeconomic sustainability. As retired licensed ministers, their journey highlights their selflessness, resilience, and profound impact on communities across the UK, Jamaica, and Ghana. Roy and Carmen have made a significant global impact in their field. Early Efforts and Advocacy: From the outset, Roy and Carmen have been staunch advocates for those in less fortunate circumstances. In London, they established the Karoy Foundation Community College, offering courses in essential skills such as maths, English, cooking, sewing and Information Technology. This college empowered adults to gain confidence and improve their socioeconomic standing. Their advocacy extended to rallying community support for the homeless, providing food, shelter, and hope to those in need. Their initiatives have significantly impacted the physical, social, and mental health of countless individuals, offering a lifeline to those who had lost hope. International Humanitarian Initiatives: Roy and Carmen's compassion knew no borders. - In Jamaica, they provided breakfast for children in two schools in Manchester, ensuring that no child started their day hungry. They also supplied essential educational resources, including books, stationery, and comfortable ergonomic chairs, so that the children could concentrate on their studies and have the equal opportunity to learn in a safe, stimulating environment. - In the mountainous regions of Yawboadi Nr. Mangoase, Ghana, West Africa, they built a borehole clean water well, and are currently in the process of building a primary school, set for completion in late 2024, aiming to provide village children as well as adults with access to education. Their clean water borehole projects in the community of Mubosco in Pakro, established in partnership with local professionals and villagers, have provided essential clean water to remote communities. These projects, funded through charitable donations and often partially self-funded by Roy and Carmen, highlight their unwavering commitment to ensuring no project or person is let down, The impact of these initiatives is profound. For the children in Manchester, Jamaica, having access to nutritious meals and proper educational resources means they can focus on their studies without the distraction of hunger or discomfort. This not only improves their academic performance but also boosts their self-esteem and future prospects. For these families, it brings relief and hope, knowing their children have a better chance at a brighter future. In the community of Mubosco in Pakro. Ghana, the clean water projects and the ongoing school construction are lifelines for the communities, ensuring better health, education, and overall quality of life. These efforts foster a sense of sustainability and empowerment, as the communities are actively involved in the projects, learning skills and gaining resources that will benefit them for generations. Personal Sacrifices and Mentorship: On many occasions over the decades, Roy and Carmen's home became a temporary sanctuary for those in need, welcoming individuals until they could confidently regain their independence. Their mentorship and counselling have guided people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have become respected pillars of British society. Establishing the Karoy Foundation: In 2009, Roy and Carmen founded the Karoy Foundation, formalising their lifelong mission to drive social change and promote socioeconomic sustainability. The Foundation has led multi-faceted sustainable aid projects, including: - Karoy Foundation Community College in Tooting, London, UK: Offering courses in key skills and information technology. - School Construction in Ghana: Providing education to village children and adults. - Clean Water Borehole Projects: Ensuring access to clean water in remote Ghanaian villages. - Breakfast Programmes in Jamaican Schools: Supporting underprivileged children. - Educational Resources for Jamaican Schools: Supplying books, stationery, and comfortable chairs. - Fundraising Initiatives: Organising sponsored walks, cake sales, galas, and concerts to support their charity’s objectives. Overcoming Adversity: Despite facing racism, the tragic violent loss of their adult son, hostility, and adversity, Roy and Carmen never let these challenges cloud their ability to see the goodness in others. Even after retiring at 62 and enduring the premature loss of their son, their dedication to service remained unwavering. Got it! Here's an updated version that includes Carmen's work with ex-offenders: Carmen steadfastly dedicated herself to her role within the Ministry of Justice, advocating for justice and equity, and providing crucial support to ex-offenders. Meanwhile, Roy selflessly devoted his time to transporting the young, elderly, and disabled, providing an indispensable service to those in need. Legacy and Inspiration: Now 85 and 84 respectively, Roy and Carmen continue to inspire with their steadfast pursuit of "tilting the world in favour of the poor," a mission inspired by Bob Geldof. Their legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. Roy and Carmen's story is a powerful reminder that true change begins with selfless acts of kindness and a commitment to uplifting those in need. Their life's work has left an indelible mark on the world, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

OUR WORK

SUSTAINABLE WORK DRIVEN BY LOCAL LEADERSHIP

WATER FOR LIFE PROGRAMME:

Addressing the global water crisis and the increasing shortage of sufficient water to meet children’s needs, we collaborate with local partners, country directors, and groups to develop sustainable, community-driven water management initiatives. Additionally, these partners implement extensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programmes to ensure the long-term health of all individuals.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME:

We collaborate with official country directors, school principals, teachers, and staff to identify essential needs and implement sustainable education programmes and resources. Our goal is to enhance students’ learning experiences and support their academic and personal development.

SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAMME:

After consultation with local school principals and staff, we identified providing breakfast for school children as an essential need, forming a locally-led sustainable solution to improve their educational outcomes and overall well-being.

We are driven by a mission to bring hope, opportunity, and optimism to communities. By empowering people with access to this fundamental human need, we help provide families with the hope, health, and opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.

“Our intention is to build and complete a primary school within a Ghana community named Yawboadi Nr. Mangoase, West Africa that we commenced in 2022. We are on course for completion for late 2024, which we believe will positively transform the lives of these people forever for better sustainable futures.  We need the continued support of donors to make this a reality. That is our continued passion and motivation.”

— Roy and Carmen Wiltshire

BE THE EXCEPTION

“To do something unparalleled in the world,

and especially at the beginning of the 21st century,

and that is to tilt the world a little bit on its axis in favour of the poor,

and that’s not a difficult thing to do.”
— Sir Bob Geldof

At the Karoy Foundation, we are steadfast in our mission to foster a world where empathy, sustainability, and well-being are not just ideals, but tangible realities. We empower communities to thrive independently and sustainably. Our dedication has catalysed a global movement, creating profound educational, social, and mental health transformations for children, adults, and families across the UK, Jamaica, and Africa.

Central to our mission is our hands-on approach: in London, we offer education in key skills for adults*, focusing on both educational and practical skills essential for today’s world. In Ghana, we are constructing a school and have installed two safe water boreholes in villages, ensuring access to clean water—a fundamental human right. In Jamaica, we provide nutritious breakfasts for schoolchildren before they start their lessons, as many do not have access to food in their homes. This ensures that students begin their day with the nutrition they need to focus and succeed in their studies. We supply schools with essential educational materials and furniture, laying the groundwork for a brighter educational future.

* The Karoy Foundation Community College for adults is temporarily closed due to the pandemic’s impact on our staff. However, we anticipate reopening in the near future.

Below are some of our key projects. Learn more about what we do, who we help, and how we work every day to create a lasting impact.

Local and International Empowerment

..."Change For The Better"...

The Local Empowerment programme is our longest-running initiative, based on the premise that making a real difference is not only possible but vital. At the Karoy Foundation, Local Empowerment is a source of great pride. Our water borehole and educational programmes emphasise community engagement, empowerment, sustainability, and accountability for these under-privileged and impoverished communities. These projects, including the construction of a school in Ghana, providing breakfast and educational resources at schools in Jamaica, running the *Karoy Foundation Community College for adults in London, and constructing two safe water borehole wells in remote villages in the mountains of Ghana, embody our commitment to local humanitarian action. Importantly, these actions address immediate needs and create a foundation for long-term growth and self-sufficiency, enabling communities to shape their own futures. We ensure that communities are at the forefront of creating solutions and driving change.

Economic Development

..."Making Change Possible"...

We see every challenge as an opportunity. Our Economic Development initiatives helps the Karoy Foundation ensure that those we serve are better prepared to persevere in the unique situations they find themselves in by improving living standards and access to education, and enhancing their economic, political, and social well-being. Providing basic necessities: Nutritious food, clean water, and quality education. Empowerment and sustainability: Ensuring communities can shape their own futures. Community Engagement: Involving the active participation of local communities in decision-making processes that affect their lives, and creating solutions and driving change. We uphold the belief that fundamental human necessities—nutritious food, clean water, and quality education—are rights that belong to all. Driven by this conviction, we labour relentlessly to convert this belief into action.

KEY FACTS

Four billion people — almost two thirds of the world’s population — experience severe water scarcity for at least one month each year. Over two billion people live in countries where water supply is inadequate. Half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025. Some 700 million people could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030. By 2040, roughly 1 in 4 children worldwide will be living in areas of extremely high water stress.
